As a concrete step towards connecting Nepal with the new Silk Road Economic Belt advocated by China, China and Nepal agreed to expand the Arniko Highway, a key route for Nepal-China trade built by the Chinese government some 50 years ago.

Renovation of the dilapidated highway connecting Kathmandu and Kodari, bordering with China, is a part of a four-point agreement signed by both countries in a Nepal-China Inter-governmental business and investment coordination meeting held in Beijing on December 18, 2014.

Mahesh Maskey, Nepali ambassador to China told APD that an MOU has been signed to revive the old Silk Road connecting Lhasa to Patna, capital of northern Indian state Bihar, via Kathmandu. The envoy said, “The revival of the Silk Road will enhance cross-country trade and Nepal will be greatly beneficial from it.”
