KATHMANDU, June 26 (Xinhua)-- Nepal's Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has been diagnosed with cancer in his lungs, officials and state media confirmed Thursday.

After Nepali doctors spotted a small "black spot" in Koirala's lungs through CT-Scan two weeks ago, he went to the U.S. on June 16 for further treatment.   "I am really sad to confirm the fact that cancer in Prime Minister's lungs has been confirmed by the reports of several investigations,"Kathmandu based ekantipur.com quoted Dr Kabirnath Yogi as saying.

He said that Koirala will undergo radiotherapy from Friday.   "The medical team investigating Koirala's health has said that there will be some positive results after the radio therapy,"said Yogi.

It has also been reported that Koirala cannot undergo surgery for the treatment of cancer due to his chronic bronchitis.

The 75-year-old democratic leader who had publicly shared that he used to consume excessive cigarettes and chew tobacco has been undergoing treatment in New York based Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for the past more than one week.

Koirala became Nepal's 37th prime minister in November, 2012 following the second constituent assembly election.
