KATHMANDU, May 25 (Xinhua)-- For the first time in the party's history, the UCPN (Maoist) on Sunday held an internal election for the selection of leaders for the party's key organizations such office bearer, the standing committee and politburo, party officials said.
The election came after rival factions of the party failed to pick the members through a consensus among them. The 151 members voted for the selection of those party structures.
The party has formed 9-member office bearer, 17-member standing committee and 51-member politburo. The national convention of the party held in the first week of this month had elected only the chairman and CC members of the party.
For nearly three weeks, UCPN( Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has tried to form those party structures but consensus was not forged among the rival factions led by him and Former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai.
"We have adopted a democratic practice inside the party holding election to select leaders," party Spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma told reporters at the party headquarters.
However, Bhattarai faction has stated that election inside the party will create divisions inside the party. The faction said election was held without a consensus among the party leaders inside the party. "The election has been held unilaterally, we will serve the party remaining as a CC member of the party," leader Devendra Poudel who is close to Bhattarai told Xinhua.
The election is likely to create further divisions inside the party which is suffering from the intra-party dispute soon after last year's November 19 elections. The dispute between Dahal and Bhattarai has plagued the Maoist party.
There are mixed views inside the party about the election. Some say in the communist party like UCPN (Maoist) it is not good to go for election, while others say it is a democratic practice and it should be appreciated.
