Forum of Common Happiness

By Surendra Paudel

As told, we gathered at the hotel’s lobby at 8:30 AM notwithstanding the chilling weather of Beijing. The weather app displayed 7 degree Celsius on the mobile screen. Moreover, it was a windy morning since I could see from the hotel lobby people walking on the streets with their hands in their pockets. In fact, it was a new and thrilling experience for me in Beijing.

The vehicle was standby in front of Minzu Hotel. I was one of the journalists eagerly waiting to receive the prestigious World Media Summit Global Awards for Excellence. It was a delightful moment for me to share the same vehicle with other journalists, including veteran Indian journalist P. Shaainath, who is the recipient of Magsaysay Award, Shaaron Rubol of Aljazeera Television, among others.

The vehicle passed through a beautiful garden, leaving behind the wide lanes. Ponds were blurry visible due to fog. Some people were already at the gate of the most popular Diaoyutai State Guest House of Beijing, the venue for the award ceremony to receive us. Ushered by the polite voices of ‘welcome’, walking on the red carpet like a celebrity was incredibly exciting– a first experience indeed!

The attractively decorated award ceremony hall was installed with cameras to capture every single moment of the ceremony.

The ceremony began with the opening remarks of Cai Mingzhao, Chairman of Xinhua News Agency, saying, “We are confident that this award will help the media organizations from across the world to tackle challenges of all times”. He elucidated the objective behind organizing the award ceremony as ‘social responsibility and serving of public welfare’. Mingzhao hoped that the award would further encourage and motivate media practitioners to continue their sharp skills for excellence. The ceremony was also aimed at bringing together the world media organizations and journalists at the same forum where journalists from across the globe would get the opportunity to discuss and sharing their experiences.
