KATHMANDU, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The Nepal government has formally opened 104 new mountains for commercial expedition, in a bid to attract more adventure tourists and mountaineers, government officials said on Tuesday.

"We have decided to open virgin mountains so as to further promote Nepal's image as a mountaineering destination," Madhusudan Burlakoti, joint secretary with Nepal's Tourism Ministry told Xinhua.

The decision came on the eve of 61st anniversary of the first Everest conquest which will be marked next week.

Among the 104, two were named after the first conquerors of Mount Everest, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. The new mountains range from 6,000 meter to 8,077 meter above the sea level.

With the 104, Nepal boasts 414 mountains that can be commercially scaled up.
